Prefectural Tree ~ Ryukyu Matsu

Ryukyu MatsuA full grown Ryukyu Matsu (Pinus Luchuensis Mayr) can reach a height of fifteen metres. As the tree develops and grows, often along roadsides, tree crowns spread into gracefully shaped branches. It is widely used in Bonsai and is very easy to propogate.

The old Ryukyu Government declared it as its prefectural tree on 7th February 1966, and after the reversion of Okinawa to Japan, the Okinawa Prefectural Government chose it as its prefectural tree on 26th February 1972.
