Prefectural Flower ~ Deego

DeigoThe Deego tree (Erythrina Orientalis) originally came from India. The bright red flowers appear along the entire length of its branches between March and May and its beauty plays a key role in promoting tourism.

The trunk section of the tree is used as a raw material for the production of traditional Ryukyuan lacquerware.

The Okinawa Prefectural Government chose it as its prefectural flower in 1972.
